Aries in Adulthood

The generativity task of middle adulthood asks Aries to redirect the Martian energy from self-assertion toward the development and empowerment of others. This transition is neither simple nor inevitable for the sign — the same drive that makes Aries powerfully effective as an initiator and a leader can, if not consciously redirected, remain primarily focused on the Arian self's ongoing projects and ambitions through the years when genuine generativity would serve both the sign and the people around them better.

Mars in adulthood produces a specific form of generativity that is characteristically Arian: the mentoring style that empowers through challenge rather than through support, the leadership that creates other leaders by demanding the best from them rather than by providing comfort, the creative production that opens territory and invites others in rather than hoarding the new ground. When Aries finds this mode — the fire that creates heat for others to warm themselves by — the generativity is genuine and powerful. The risk is the inverse: the Arian energy that remains primarily focused on the self's own projects, using its considerable capacity for initiative to build an empire that serves the self rather than investing in what will persist after the builder has moved on.

The stagnation shadow for Aries takes a specific and sometimes non-obvious form. The Aries adult who is perpetually starting new things — new projects, new ventures, new relationships, new chapters — can create the appearance of generativity while actually remaining in a form of developmental stagnation: the endless new beginning that never becomes the sustained investment required for genuine generative work. Generativity requires follow-through of a kind that the initial Arian burst does not provide; the sign that is superb at starting must develop the capacity to sustain in order to genuinely generate.

Care — Erikson's virtue — requires for Aries the specific development of the sustained, non-dramatic investment in others that is less visible and less immediately rewarding than the initiative-taking that came naturally in earlier stages. Aries cares about the big gestures; the developmental work of adulthood is to care consistently about the small ones — the sustained availability, the repeated return to someone else's development, the willingness to be interested in the other's progress rather than one's own.
