Fire is the first and most universal of the world's transformative symbols, and every tradition that has lived closely with it has arrived at the same understanding: fire does not simply destroy — it changes the nature of what it touches. The Greek myth of Prometheus is one of the oldest in Western civilisation, and its meaning has never been ambiguous: fire is the gift of the divine, stolen for the human, the element that makes civilisation and consciousness possible. In Celtic traditions, fire was the sacred center of home and community, the element that held the circle together: Brigid, goddess of the forge, the hearth, and inspired speech, governed the three fires — the fire of transformation, the fire of healing, and the fire of creativity. In Aztec cosmology, the Fifth Sun — the current world — was created through a sacrifice in fire, and the universe is kept in motion only by the ongoing gift of fire. What the dream fire is almost never doing is simply threatening you. It is the most ancient image of change in human experience, and it is asking what in you is ready to be transformed.
In Vedic tradition, fire (*Agni*) is the first word of the oldest text — the Rigveda opens with the invocation of fire as the sacred mediator between human and divine. Sub-Saharan traditions across West and Central Africa treat fire as an ancestor-communication element: the fire that burns at night is the threshold at which the living and the ancestors speak.
